Training with Higher Belts in BJJ

by Anthony on June 26, 2008

At the BJJ academy that I train at there are currently only white and blue belts. There is one purple belt, but due to a pestering injury, he is not currently training. This leaves limited opportunity to train with higher belts to learn and grow from.

When I first started training it was great to train with a blue belt. He was able to help me better my technique and to better understand the different aspects of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. I learned a lot from him, and he was always willing to teach me, and I believe it was because of him that I was able to get to my blue belt pretty fast. Unfortunately, he is the one who is now a purple belt and unable to train right now.

Last night I had the opportunity to roll with a brown belt who was visiting from out of town. I went three rounds, but lasted about 45 seconds before I tapped each time. It would be nice to have the opportunity to train with someone like him more often. He was very controlled and had no problem picking which way he wanted to take me out. That is the way it should be when you’re a brown belt, right?

Although I feel I am improving in some ways in BJJ, it would be nice to roll with higher belts who can show me how I can improve and gain insight from.
